Ferrets 101: How much do you know about your ferret?

Ferrets are smart, intelligent, curious little creatures with personalities all their own. Ferrets like to play and have fun just like humans do; as well they have been known to take care of their owners. However, these animals do place great demands on their owners and do require that you give them a certain amount of attention. This means that these animals are not great pets for everyone. Some people may not be able to handle these animals or cope with the amount of care and attention that they need.

Ferrets have not always been domestic animals. It is in recent years that more and more people have been turning them into household pets. These animals are distant relatives to polecats and this is evident in their appearance, as they look quite similar. Ferrets are great animals to have around the house as they control the appearance of unwanted pests and other animals. They are also fun to play with and they are great at hide and seek!

Ferrets themselves are carnivorous animals. They belong to oldest living family in the Carnivora, the Mustelidae family. In the world today there are two distinct species of Ferrets: the Black-Footed Ferret and the European Domestic Ferret. Not all ferrets are great pets as there are many wild ferrets around the world. Most can be found in Australia and on some of the Oceanic Islands.

The Black-Footed Ferret and the European Domestic Ferret are two different breeds of ferrets that have their own distinct characteristics. The Black-Footed animal has a broad head. Their faces also appear less pointed. The eyes of these animals are quite large, much larger then their European counterparts. As the name suggests their feet are black as are their heads and legs.

The European Domestic Ferrets have large front feet. This is due to the fact that they use their front feet for digging. The unusual shape of their tale that makes them different from most other ferrets distinguishes them. Their tales are wide and flat and taper off toward the tip. The tales of these animals may vary in color. These animals come a variety of colors such as albino, chocolate, silver and also cinnamon. Their eyes are similar to that of a cat as they close when exposed to bright light.

Wild ferrets have been found to be very territorial. They live what is called a solitary life. The male ferrets do not permit other male ferrets into their territory and the same goes for the females. However, it has also been found that the males and females do sometimes cross into the others territory for mating purposes. The hunting styles of male and females are quite different. Due to the slight difference in the size of the male and females the females themselves seek smaller prey then do the males. Both sexes, however, do hunt some of the same animals, such as rabbits and hares. The males tend to stay away from rat holes and burrows when hunting.
