How to find just the right toy for your ferret

Ferrets are just like any other animal or pet, they like to have fun and to play. But what fun is playing if you have nothing to play with? This is why many ferret supply companies today have invested in selling ferret toys. Ferret toys take on many shapes and forms and they are always unique and are designed with the energetic ferret in mind. There are many different types of toys that ferrets like and each ferret will have its own preference of toys.

Many stores carry specialized toys for ferrets. Research has found that cat toys can double as ferret toys as well. Ferrets and cats have been found to have similar taste in food and toys. However, if you are using cat toys as ferret toys then there are some things that you should keep in mind. The toys should always be solid and they should never be sharp or have anything sticking off the sides. This could seriously hurt your ferret. Also the toys should not have any removable parts or any foam surfaces. If a piece of foam was to come off the toy and your ferret was to swallow it, it could cause what is known as digestive tract blockages.

Ferrets have been found to be harder on the toys then cats would be so you should keep this in mind when selecting a toy for your ferret. If you are using store bought ferret toys then you should always remember that the toys themselves should be large enough so that the ferret can play with them easily and so they cannot be swallowed in any way. For example, ferrets seem to enjoy playing with webbed balls which are collapsible balls. However many people do not recommend these as they break easily and then small pieces of plastic may be accidentally swallowed. It is a good idea to stay away from all plastic toys as they have been known to break fast and easily. Vets recommended that you stay away from super balls (oversized stuffed balls) as ferrets love to chew on them and to eat the pieces that they are able to break off. This also can cause serious digestive problems.

Another type of ferret toy is a homemade toy. As the name suggests these are toys that the pet owners have made themselves. These are a favorite among most ferrets. If you allow your ferret to roam around the house you will quickly find that the animal will find things they like and don’t like. It has been said that ferrets like soft materials. Therefore, they may enjoy playing with a toy that has been made out an old piece of cloth. Ferrets love to play hide and seek so you may want to make toy that they can hide in. A good idea is to take the leg of an old pair of jeans and create a tunnel like toy out of. You ferret is sure to spend hours running in and out of the tunnel. If you are going to your own toys for your ferret the possibilities are endless. If you are not sure what things you can make there are various sites on the Internet that offer a wide variety of pet ideas. You can experiment and find out what your ferret likes and does not like. Ferret toys don't have to be expensive and can provide hours of fun and entertainment.
