Ferret Litter

How to choose the right litter for your ferret

Marshall Ferret LitterJust like a cage for your ferret, ferret litter is a must have product if you are a ferret owner. Ferrets are like cats and they use the bathroom indoors, therefore you must have a place for them to do this. There are in fact different types of ferret litter that you can use and some ferrets can be picky about their litter. The best thing to do is experiment with different types of litter that you find is working best for your ferret or ferrets. The litter itself should be placed in some form of litter box. Research has found that the smaller the box the less likely the ferret is to use the litter box, so make sure that you have a fairly large box. The littler box should be large enough so that the ferret can get in a move around.

Ferret litter comes in variety of types, some being better than others. Like most cat litter, ferret litter come in the form of non-dumping, non-scented gray gravel. The litter that is used for a cat and for a ferret is quite similar as are the animals. However, sometimes it is not a good idea to use cat litter as litters are made with that animal in mind. For example cat litter is made in a way that is safe for the cat and their paws. Ferrets are smaller then cats and sometimes cat litter is not appropriate for a ferret. This is something you should keep in mind when purchasing litter for your ferret. Cat litter is more common and easier to find but sometimes you need to take the time to find the product that is made specifically for your animal. For ferrets, it is a good idea to look for litter that is dust free. Ferrets like to move around a lot and they have been known to make a mess in their litter boxes therefore you want a litter that makes as little mess as possible. You do not want dust flying around the room every time your pet uses the litter. This dust free is great for people who have multiple ferrets.

Ferrets will almost always use the bathroom in a corner and they are picky about where they use the bathroom. Therefore when placing the ferret litter somewhere in the house it is recommended that you let the ferret pick the place. This sounds a little disgusting but for the first couple of times that the ferret uses the bathroom you should not use the litter. In most cases the ferret will use the same area of the room. Once the ferret has selected his bathroom area then you can begin to litter train the ferret. When you begin to litter train is where treats and rewards will play a very important role. You should reinforce positive behavior, which in this case is the using of the litter box.

Ferret litters have been found to be quite expensive and some people are deterred from spending a great deal of money on litter. Premium ferret litter is well worth the cost. If your budget can't afford it, there are cheaper substitutes that may work as effectively. It has been found that small wood chips placed in litter box work. These are cheaper and are softer on the ferret’s feet. If you are not sure what you should be using then it is recommended that you ask someone at your local pet store and they can help you find the perfect litter for your ferret.
