Ferret Food

How to choose the best food for your ferret

ZuPreem Ferret DietBuying ferret food is not a simple as you might think. People who are first-time ferret owners make the mistakes of thinking that ferret food is anything you want to feed the ferret. This is not the case at all! Ferrets need to receive a certain amount of nutrients and vitamins from their food. Some ferrets like to eat kitten food, which has been found to be fine as kittens are similar to ferrets and the food contains most, if not all, of the same nutrients needed. You should never feed your ferret table scraps or leftover food. This could do more damage than good.

Research has found that there is certain types of ferret food that should be used at different times of the year. This is due to the fact that ferrets have different nutritional needs at different times of the year and it is necessary that these needs be met to ensure the health of your ferret. During different times of the year ferrets will need different levels or intakes of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Like humans, ferrets have different energy levels during certain times of the year and by having the proper food you can help keep your ferrets active.

During the winter months your ferret food should contain the following: thirty five percent protein, twenty to fifty percent fat and finally roughly about twenty-five percent carbohydrates. During the spring your ferret should receive about forty percent protein, forty to fifty percent fat followed by twenty percent carbohydrates. It is during the summer months when your ferret will receive the lowest amount of protein. During these months it is recommended that your ferret receive approximately thirty percent protein combined with thirty-five to fifty percent fat and twenty percent carbohydrates. The autumn months are exactly the same as the summer months. The ferret should be on a well-maintained diet leading in to the winter months. From this we can see that on a regular basis your ferret should receive twice as much protein as fat and less carbohydrates than fat. This is why it is not recommended that you feed your ferret kitten food on a regular basis as some of it on the market today does not follow these dietary rules and may do more damage than good to your ferret.

Some people have resorted to making their own ferret food. People have become more and more skeptical of canned or bagged ferret food and they feel that their pets are not getting all the nutrients that they need. There are various places that you can go to find recipes for ferret food. The first place to check is of course your local pet store as the people working there may have some suggestion or even some pet cookbooks that offer some healthy recipes. If you are unable to find anything at your pet store then the next best place to check is the Internet. On the Internet you can find a wide variety of ideas for recipes for your ferret. You can have fun trying out new and exciting food selections for your ferret.

Making your own ferret food isn't for everyone and there are many quality choices. Both Marshall and ZuPreem make specialized food for ferrets.
