Ferret CareFerrets can be a big responsibility and they require a lot of care and attention. These are not easy animals to care for. Ferret care is a huge job and for some people it is too much to handle. However, if you are aware of the various ways that you can administer ferret care then the task may not be as bad as it might seem to be in the beginning. Ferret care encompasses many things. For starters, you should always keep your ferret contained or housed in a cage that is adequate for the size of the ferret. Animals that are confined and are not permitted to run and play then the animal may become sick. If the animal does not become sick there is a chance that the animal will become lazy and they will not be able to run around and play after a while. Grooming is a huge part of ferret care as well. People sometimes think that an animal of this size does not need to be groomed, but this is incorrect. Ferret grooming can be a hard task at first, as the animal wants to move around all the time. However once you have the animal under control the task of grooming can be quick and sometimes enjoyable. Normally these animals are clean and they have been known to clean themselves, however, there are some instances when they don’t. Eventually if not cleaned then their fur will become matted and it may begin to smell. Grooming and care of the fur will eliminate all knots in the fur and it will decrease the chance of the fur odor. Grooming also should include washing the fur with ferret shampoo. Marshall makes several quality ferret shampoos including a "no tears" version.Feeding of the ferret is the most important part of ferret care. Without food and water, the ferret like any other animal, will not survive. There are variety of things that you ferret can and will eat. If at all possible then you should try to get your ferret to eat ferret food. This can be found at your local pet store or can be ordered on the Internet. This food contains all the important vitamins and nutrients that your pet will need to keep it healthy and will help it live longer. You could always feed your ferret high-quality kitten food. You should never feed your ferret scraps and left over foods that people eat. The foods that are eaten by humans are not suitable for ferrets and other pets. These foods may be more harmful to the animals then good. The ferret should be given small portions of food. Ferrets are able to eat certain kinds of fish however. The fish should be non-oily. If you do get into the habit of feeding your ferret human table food then it is recommended that you also give your pet vitamin and nutrient supplements. This will ensure that your pet is getting a healthy balanced diet. Marshall ferret food is recommended, as well as Totally Ferret and ZuPreem. There is another element to ferret care that people are not aware of. How you handle your ferret is a major part of caring for your pet. There is a proper way to pick up your ferret. You should be careful to lift up your ferret by placing one hand over the shoulders and another under the legs of the ferret. The chin of the animal should rest on your hand. This is so all parts of the ferret are supported and there is not strain on any part of the body that could cause damage to the bones. |
